April Newsletter: International Day of the Street Child Events

On April 12th, we celebrated and sought to raise awareness through the first annual International Day of the Street child. Beginning with a visit to our pen pal partners at Central A&M High School, we talked about what it is like to be a street child in preparation for their fundraising event. Following this, on the day of the 12th, Dr. Dunkley (founder/director) presented a TED TALK at Greenville College on childhood trauma and how that affects the health of our students in Malawi. We tipped off the evening with a free showing of the movie Lion at the globe theater which accurately depicts the life of a street child in India. Although the setting is different, our audience was able to see the same realities that homeless children face regardless of context.

Finally, in order to bring support, knowledge, and funds around our students in Malawi, we hosted a 5k run/walk event with the support of GCSA at Patriots Park in Greenville, Illinois. Even though we had complications due to weather, we were able to raise over $1000 for our students! Praise God!

We would like to thank everyone for their support, time, efforts, and gifts given to our students in Malawi. We hope to host these events again next year, so please be on the lookout and mark your calendars now!

PS. Be on the lookout of some stunning photos from our 5k event as well!
